Family Support

SNAPS’ Family Support Project provides support to parents and carers looking after a child with additional needs. 

Our aim is to offer opportunities for parents and carers to take some time for themselves, and for families to meet others in similar situations to themselves. We do this through:  

  • Information and support 
  • Parent and carer groups  
  • Wellbeing activities  
  • ‘Walk and talk’ sessions  
  • Family and holiday activities  
  • Signposting and referrals to other services 
SNAPS Picnic

You can refer yourself directly to our Family Support project and activities by completing our referral form (link below). 

Professionals can also use this form to refer a family you are working with. Children do not need to have a formal diagnosis for families to receive support.

The Different Minds: a series about Neurodiversity by Broadcaster John Offord.  features John talks to people from all walks of life about the different ways our brains can work and interpret information. 

The Neurodivergent Woman:  hosted by a clinical psychologist and a clinical neuropsychologist, who discuss the broad spectrum of neurodivergences and the crossovers between them. Although broadcast from Australia, they reference systems and research from the UK and USA.

Socialising and play

All SNAPS sessions give children with additional needs and their siblings to meet and have fun with other children, who are experiencing similar things to themselves.

Our sessions are also an opportunity for parents and carers to get together and talk to other parents who may have similar experiences. It gives our families the chance to share information and provide mutual support for each other.

During our Saturday sessions, the main halls are open for 9.30am-1.30pm for informal play and socialising. We also deliver activities including Boccia, storytelling, music therapy and dance.

Swimming

SNAPS’ swimming sessions allows the children to engage in a 1:1 swim with a qualified instructor in the hydrotherapy pool. The sessions are designed to help children’s mobility and strength and develop sensory stimulation. Swimming also helps the children gain confidence and enables some children to move into mainstream swimming provision in the community.

Hydrotherapy

Our hydrotherapy sessions offer children the chance to enjoy one-to-one time with a qualified physiotherapist in a hydrotherapy pool.

Each session is tailored to your child’s individual needs. At the first appointment, we’ll gather information from you as a parent or carer, and combine this with an assessment from our physiotherapist to create a personalised programme of support.

This programme is reviewed and updated at every session to ensure your child receives the highest level of care. All exercises are designed to help improve mobility, build strength, and support your child’s physical development in a fun and gentle way.

Hydrotherapy is only available at our Penny Field site.

Football

SNAPS offers inclusive, friendly football sessions. This is a chance for children with additional needs and their siblings to join a football team where the emphasis in on FUN!

Children from 4-16 of all abilities are welcome. (Unfortunately we are unable to accept wheelchair users due to the nature of the surface.)

Sessions take place every Saturday during term-time at our Broomfield site (Broomfield SILC, LS10 3JP) 
 
We run four one-hour classes to suit different age groups and abilities, from 9.30am to 1.30pm.
